“I just felt stuck!  I was raging mad because there was no way out of my situation and I didn’t know what to do to change things.”  – RMFY alumni, Amza describing himself as a teenager.

Have you ever felt this way? Well this is exactly what Amza was feeling during his 9th grade year at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. When Amza was very young his parents decided to split up.  He lived with his mom briefly, and watched her struggle to provide for him and his three little sisters.

“I wanted to help out more because I was so tired of living in low-income housing, eating ramen noodles and watching my mom wrestle with what bills to pay verses which could go unpaid for a little longer.  There just never seemed to be enough.  My mom was totally overwhelmed,” Amza Mahboub describing his family life.

The obstacles just became too much for Amza’s mother to bear so she thought it would be best for Amza to go live with his Dad.

“Of course I went, but I was so angry and mad at my mom for letting me go.  I actually stopped speaking to her for years.  I kept that anger and regret of missing out on the lives of my sisters in my heart for a long time.  My anger manifested in poor actions and bad decisions.  I was headed down a path to destruction throughout my early teen years.  I even used my anger and brokenness to influence others to do negative things, until one day another broken friend invited me to choose a different path. He asked me to join Right Moves For Youth.  It was absolutely the best decision I could have made! Right Moves For Youth changed my life for the better, forever.”  Amza Mahboub, May 2020.

Today, Amza is a former Marine, who now works in IT for the United States government, as a Network Operations Chief. He attributes the start of his military career to RMFY as he was first introduced to this opportunity by a RMFY guest speaker who was also a Marine.  In his current role Amza is responsible for communications via satellite to more than 167,000 service men and women stationed all over the world!

Now more than ever, our students need your support.  Like Amza, many young people in our community are facing crossroads.  Right Moves For Youth transforms those crossroads into inroads toward success, complete with mentors and a customized life plan.  With intention, we help students choose a positive path and navigate forward.
